Google Workspace
Why 2026 is the year of the great Microsoft to Workspace migration
For years, organizations have relied on the familiar, comfortable rhythm of Microsoft updates. You buy the license, you install the software, and you move on. But there is a specific date approaching that you can’t ignore.
Industry experts call it the “support cliff.” On 14 October 2026, Microsoft will stop supporting key tools that run businesses everywhere.
If you have been looking for a reason to finally modernize your IT, this is it. Here is why companies (from small businesses to massive government agencies) are treating 2026 as the year to jump.
End of support after 13 October
The specific date you need to know is October 14, 2026. On this day, Microsoft officially retires support for:
- Windows 11 version 24H2 (Home and Pro)
- Office 2021 (the perpetual license version)
Once that date passes, these tools stop getting security patches, bug fixes, or technical updates. This creates three big problems:
- Security risks: Without updates, you become a target. We saw this with the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017, which hit unsupported systems and cost billions.
- High costs: You can buy “Extended Security Updates” to stay safe, but the price keeps going up every year.
-
Hardware trap: To move to a newer Windows version, you often need computers with specific chips. This forces you to buy new hardware just to run the same software.
Note: As of 14 October 2025, Microsoft ended support for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019. You can read more about it and your options here.
If the government can move fast, so can you
You might think moving your company is too hard. But if the federal government can do it, you probably can too.
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is currently moving 55,000 employees away from legacy Microsoft systems to Google Workspace. They call this the “1DOT IT” strategy.
This is a massive $89 million project designed to replace 4,200 servers and 425 old systems with a clean cloud setup. By treating this as a modernization project, they are seeing results like:
- Speed: They gave staff access in just 30 days.
- Savings: By using the GSA “OneGov” program, they secured a 71% discount on the transition.
- AI adoption: They deployed advanced AI tools (like Gemini and NotebookLM) across the whole agency in just 60 days.
This speed is exactly what Revolgy aims for. Our teams handle the so-called heavy lifting, from architecture to the actual build, so you can see value quickly, just like the DOT did.
A safer, better way to move your files
The biggest fear with leaving legacy systems is the migration process itself. Usually, IT teams worry about broken permissions, lost files, and long downtimes.
Google has recently fixed this with new “high-fidelity” tools that move data from fragmented storage solutions (like Dropbox Business) directly into Drive.
That is where our implementation management comes in. We make sure the tools are used correctly to solve your specific headaches.
Here is how the new process works:
- Permissions stay safe: You don’t have to rebuild your security. Folder structures and sharing rules move over exactly as they are.
- No downtime: The system supports “delta updates.” You can migrate the bulk of your data while your team keeps working. A final quick sync catches any new changes, so there is no data gap.
- Total control: IT admins get detailed logs to see exactly which files moved, ensuring nothing gets left behind.
It’s about people, not just software
The DOT didn’t just install software; they changed how they worked. They immediately integrated AI into their daily routine.
At Revolgy, we believe that cloud doesn’t solve problems; people do.
You can have the best AI in the world, but it’s useless if your team doesn’t know how to use it. That is why our trainings and change management services are central to what we do. We don’t just hand you a login and walk away. We teach your team how to use Gemini to write better reports or use Drive to collaborate in real-time.
