Google Keep on the web finally gets text formatting
Google Keep users who rely on the web version have been waiting for text formatting options. The good news is that Google is finally rolling out these long-requested features to Google Keep on the web. This update brings the web experience closer to what the mobile app already offers.
What is Google Keep & how it works
Google Keep is a popular tool for writing down ideas, making lists, and staying organized. You can access it on phones, computers, and smartwatches, and everything syncs automatically. This means your notes are always up to date, no matter where you are.
Keep also helps you stay organized by letting you search, use different colors, add labels, pin important notes, and filter your content. You can also set reminders so you don’t miss important dates.
But Google Keep isn’t just for simple note-taking. It also has features that work well for collaborating and connecting with other Google Workspace tools. You can create and edit notes with others in real time, which is great for teamwork. You can also add notes from other Google Workspace apps and send them directly to Google Docs to turn them into more finished documents. Offline use is supported too — your edits sync once you’re back online.
Text formatting options arrived in the mobile app in 2023, but they were missing from the web version. As many people use Keep on a desktop alongside other Workspace tools, this has been one of the most requested additions.
Text formatting comes to Google Keep on the web
New formatting options on the web include:
- Bold
- Italic
- Underline
- Heading 1 (H1)
- Heading 2 (H2)
- Clear formatting
Finding the new tools is easy. In the updated Google Keep web editor, you’ll see a button with an underlined “A” near the bottom left. Clicking it opens a bar with all the formatting options.
This addition comes after other recent improvements to Google Keep. These include a refreshed look for the widget last month and the ability, added last year, to sync Keep reminders with Google Tasks. You could also start using a stylus to add handwritten notes on Android phones.
While this update brings helpful formatting, one big thing is still missing: the option to add links to text. This feature is still not in Google Keep, though some think it might come later.
The formatting update is now rolling out gradually. It’s coming to users with Google Workspace accounts, Workspace Individual accounts, and personal Google accounts. Since it’s a staged rollout, it may take several days or weeks for the feature to appear for everyone.
For Google Workspace users, text formatting in Keep makes shared notes clearer and easier to scan. Even small changes can improve everyday collaboration.
