Looking through long PDF files to find key details or figure out what to do next can take a lot of time. Google is trying to make that easier by adding its Gemini AI directly into Google Drive.
With this new feature, users can get quick summaries of PDFs and helpful suggestions — like writing a proposal or coming up with interview questions — without leaving the viewer. In this article, we’ll explain how it works, how you can use it in your daily work, and which users have access.
The new feature uses Gemini, Google’s large language model, to help users make sense of PDF documents without switching tabs or apps. When you open a PDF in Google Drive, AI-generated insights will appear right alongside the file.
When a PDF is opened in Drive’s built-in viewer, a summary card now shows up automatically. It sits in the preview panel, where you’d typically see file info or annotations. There’s no need to launch Gemini separately or leave the viewer — Google has integrated the AI tools directly into the interface.
Each summary card has two main parts. The first part is a short, one-paragraph summary that quickly explains the main points of the document. The second part is a set of buttons with helpful actions based on what’s in the PDF.
Gemini scans the text and recognizes the type of document being viewed. For example, after scanning a business report, it might suggest drafting a proposal. If the document is a resume, it can give you a list of potential interview questions.
These suggestion features build on earlier Gemini use cases — such as writing email drafts — but apply them directly within the Drive interface.
These integrated summaries and action buttons can be useful across different workflows. Rather than just helping you read faster, the feature is designed to help you move from understanding a document to actually doing something with it.
People in sales or business development often work with client documents or internal research. If someone opens a PDF with a market analysis or a client’s request for proposal, Gemini might suggest starting a draft proposal. This helps users get a first version started right away, using the key points pulled directly from the document.
Recruiters can use it when reviewing resumes. Open a candidate’s CV in Google Drive, and Gemini can suggest a list of interview questions based on the person’s work history and skills.
Even if you’re not dealing with proposals or resumes, this tool can still help by suggesting next steps. After reviewing a report, for example, Gemini might prompt you to create a list of tasks or raise questions that need follow-up.
Not all users can see this new feature right away. You’ll need to be using one of the supported Google Workspace plans and have the right settings turned on.
Google started rolling out the new feature on June 12, 2025. It’s a gradual release and could take up to 15 days to appear for eligible users, but most people on supported plans should have it by June 26. Regular Workspace domains are expected to have it by July 7.
From its launch, the tool supports over 20 languages, making it accessible to a global user base.
This update is specifically designed for business and education users and is not available for personal Google accounts. Eligibility is limited to customers on specific Google Workspace plans, including Business Standard, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus. It is also available to users with the Gemini Education Plan.
For the feature to work, Google Workspace admins need to allow AI-based smart features in the Admin console. Once that’s done, individual users must also make sure smart features and personalization are enabled in their own account settings. Without both settings enabled, the summary card won’t appear in Google Drive.
