Google unveils new AI model Gemini and updates Bard

Written by Jana Brnakova | December 7, 2023

Competition can lead to great progress. Google, competing with OpenAI in its strive to be the tech leader in AI development, has just unveiled its new AI product — Gemini. It comes a year after OpenAI’s ChatGPT was launched, and supposedly, it should be the most advanced AI model yet.

What makes Gemini unique?

Compared to its competitors, Gemini can react to spoken language, pictures, text, and even code simultaneously.

“Before bringing it to the public, we ran Gemini Pro through a number of industry-standard benchmarks. In six out of eight benchmarks, Gemini Pro outperformed GPT-3.5, including in MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding), one of the key leading standards for measuring large AI models, and GSM8K, which measures grade school math reasoning,” as stated on Google.

The video shows Gemini’s capabilities in practice.

Gemini will initially be in English, but the company said the technology will eventually have no problem handling other languages. The model will also eventually be incorporated into Google’s internet search engine.

There are plans for a gradual roll-out of Gemini into its products, with less sophisticated versions, Nano and Pro, already being integrated into Bard chatbot and Pixel 8 Pro phones.

The Gemini family

Gemini isn’t one single model; it’s a family of three — Gemini Pro, Gemini Ultra, and Gemini Nano — so it can run everywhere, from data centers to mobile devices. Gemini Pro is the smallest and most efficient model, while Gemini Ultra is the largest and most powerful — and not yet released.

  • Gemini Nano: The smallest and most efficient model, Gemini Nano is ideal for resource-constrained devices without having to connect to external servers.
  • Gemini Pro: Gemini Pro is the initial stage of the Bard upgrade, designed specifically to enhance the chatbot’s capabilities.
  • Gemini Ultra: The most powerful Gemini model, trained to be “natively multimodal” on a massive dataset of code, text in multiple languages, audio, images, and videos.

Bard powered by Gemini Pro

Gemini is now being integrated into Bard, marking its most significant upgrade to date.

Starting from its release, Bard will utilize a specially tailored version of Gemini Pro in English to enhance its reasoning, planning, comprehension, and other aspects. Early next year, Google will introduce Bard Advanced powered by Gemini Ultra.
